News / No Comments

I am proud to announce the launch of the expanded business services through Side Arts! It is my goal to continue to develop new, easy-to-use features that help promote both artists and art related business in our community.

Now businesses and organizations can manage their own profile through a simple log in and edit feature on our website! The business page now performs similar to the artist page where the most recently updated profiles are shown first, random profiles are shown second, all profiles are shown on a separate page, profiles can be sorted by category, and a text search feature is included.

Business are encouraged to continue sending press releases for the blog. Any feedback about the site or bugs is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support of Side Arts and the Philly arts community.

As curator, I want to represent what is happening in Philadelphia’s own studios w/in the context of this specific challenge: text/textile. Studio artists, teaching artists, student artists, professional artisans, and exquisite crafters… all inclined to find & create a link with the concept/context of text/textile were invited to submit work, from which I chose select pieces, for this salon-style exhibition.

Artwork to be used on Set of “Past Life” airing soon on FOX

Updated 1/5/10
New information thanks to @MJRose. Looks like FOX’s “Past Life” will air on Thursdays after Bones. Here’s the 2010 network television schedule. The pilot is set to air on February 11th at 8pm EST, but will regularly air at 9pm on Thursdays after Bones.

This looks like an exciting new show that blends a little bit of House, M.D. with CSI and Ghost Whisperer. It is based on the novel “The Reincarnationist” by M.J. Rose.

15 of my prints, tiles and original paintings were purchased for use on the set, but I do not know in which episodes they will appear. My guess is that the earliest few episodes were already filmed before the set designer purchased my art.

I hope that folks can help in the scavenger hunt to try to find them. :) I’m looking forward to watching the episodes….not only because the show sounds exciting, but because it will be fun to try to find the art! Be sure to post a reply if you recognize any of the artwork in the scenes. The more eyes the better. haha!

Many thanks to Bonanza Productions for selecting some of my pieces to adorn their sets. It’s really quite exciting! Thank you also to M.J.Rose for tweeting a message to me about the show dates.

The Slingluff Gallery presents Mindy Kober

Posted by Side Arts on January 04, 2010
Gallery Opening / No Comments

Contemporary Artist Mindy Kober, from Houston, creates humorous recreations of the scenes, often incorporating imagery from current American pop culture using gouache and other mixed media on paper. Sampled images are taken out of context and combined in new ways for the viewer to interpret.

January 9, 2010, Kober will be having a solo show from 6-9pm.

In her large scale drawings on paper, she juxtaposes stereotypical American characters and icons into foreign or created environments, where they can interact in various ways. These cultural relationships explore themes of politics, colonialism, diaspora, and nationalism, and environmental issues.

Mindy Kober received her BFA in painting from the University of Houston, and her MFA in painting from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Selected shows include: “Current,” Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, Michigan; “Tall Tales,” Pulp, Omaha, Nebraska; “Houston Area Show 2008,” Blaffer Museum, Houston, Texas; “Mindy Kober,” “Storms,” Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, Athens, Georgia; “Systems,” 1305 Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio; and she is represented by IAO Projects in Salt Lake City, Utah and Mulcahy Modern in Dallas, Texas.

About The Slingluff Gallery: Studio 27.28 opened its doors in 2008 in the Art Museum Area. With the move to Fishtown Studio 27.28 has quickly morphed into The Slingluff Gallery. Featuring local, national, and international artists every first Saturday, they are dedicated to giving artists of all mediums an opportunity to show on the other side of the country or ocean or for their first time. The Slingluff Gallery also features handmade items in their gallery, from jewelry to pottery and scarves.
