Take your photography to the next level. Find your strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has both!!! This year’s Photography Expo was the hardest ever to be juried in. Usually 40 to 50 photographers enter, this year there were 76. There were over 200 entries and only 50 photographs were accepted. Almost everyone who took the review last year was accepted into the exhibition. Ken Goodfellow our first place winner this year took the review and stated he followed Richard’s instructions to the letter.

Testimonial by Photographer Ken Goodfellow. Ken took the class March 29th, 2009

“It was a pleasure to work with Mr. Johnson on my portfolio review, never having one before it was well worth the time spent. The review of my images before meeting Richard was an added bonus since he already had an understanding of what I was presenting, and had completed written material for me to go over.

Richard’s communication of what should be worked on to present portfolios, besides discussing the images, was very detailed and knowledge worth learning. I would highly recommend a review as lessons learned for me from a technical and business perspective can be put into practice immediately”.

Tyme Gallery features “Nature’s Forms” with Liverpool artist Joel Bird and award winning and published Chester County artist, Jimmer Breen. The opening reception is Friday March 12th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The exhibition runs from the 12th through April 6th.

Joel Bird – Magpies & Goldeneye
Jimmer Breen – Tombstone Blues & Split

Joel Bird, Liverpool artist, is flying in from the UK for this great occasion. He is an artist of many talents, visual and performing. Bird states, “I am interested in the harmony and tension between opposing forces. I visualize the interaction between what is internal and external as a flow of form that composes a framework which allows stability (reality) to exist”. On his last tour to the US in 2008 he sold work to private and public collections in Philadelphia, Allentown, Daytona, Florida and New York. While Bird has seen many parts of the world he has a special place in his heart for Pennsylvania. In this exhibit he is focusing more on our harmony with the natural world. He feels Pennsylvania has some magical countryside and finds Pennsylvanians in general have a wonderfully healthy attitude towards the outdoors. The works show landscapes and people interacting with their environments. He has also exhibited throughout England and Scotland and applications for residencies in Europe has achieved a recent invite to the Florence Biennial.

Bird’s work spans different aspects of audio visual media. He has composed music for Film, TV, Animation, Theatre & Audio Books. TV and Film clients include The BBC, Channel 4, The mother group, Diplomat films, Between the Eyes & Jab Productions. He has held the post of Musical director in the Unity Theatre, Liverpool and worked in pop music for Universal USA and GUT records UK, working with bands such as Space and Elvis Costello.

Jimmer Breen is a surreal artist at heart with a love for the human form and face. According to Breen, “I am drawn to our physical selves; our features, expressions, movements… After all, we are magnificent machines”. Breen received a BFA from West Chest University and was a recipient of the “Jack Gardener Hawthorne Award for Excellence in Painting”. His work has been exhibited throughout the Greater Delaware Valley and his art in is the home of many private collectors including a demand for mural work.

“Nature’s Forms”, a bold and colorful collection of the surreal world. The opening reception is Friday, March 12th, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. CONFLUENCE. Is intended to celebrate the possibilities and complexities of the printmaking worlds of Bobbie Adams, Rachel Citrino, and Linda Dubin Garfield.

They employ traditional and contemporary technologies using multiple and iterative processes. The convergence of these artists is their obsession with and love of mark-making..how their personal marks and the etch, the press, the pixels, dance. This is a celebration of the mark.

DA VINCI ART ALLIANCE is one of the oldest artist-run gallery in the region, founded in 1931 by 17 prominent artists. It has been housed in its present quarters across from Fleisher Art Memorial, for over 50 years

The Slingluff Gallery presents Julian Duron

What do organic, synthetic, and imaginary textures have to do with art? It has everything to do with Julian Duron’s new artwork, Windows, featured from March 6-28 at The Slingluff Gallery. Meet Duron and be the first to view his newest work on March 6th, from 6-9pm.

“There is no such thing as a freestanding work of art. Each work is bracketed by: 1) everything that came before it, and 2) the next blank surface. Between the two is the grand gulf that excites artists and collectors alike. Windows emerges almost exclusively from the natural environment. Textures – organic, synthetic, and imaginary – are an important part of the composition, and are natural outgrowths of the subject matter.”
- Duron

Duron, living in Brooklyn, NY, thrives on the city and what it has to offer, which shows through in his abstract paintings. “The vibrant art communities of NYC are supported by artists at every level and an international catalogue of discriminating collectors. They share a sense of community that fosters the development of creativity – in art, music, film, and dance. Traveling from my home into the CIty on a daily basis offers the elements of everyday life that I find vital to my own well-being: unlimited surfaces to exhibit work, fine coffee, strong web communities and creative computer subcultures, to name a few. I publish two webzines Coattails.org and Bodegaboys.com. These sites features emerging music, music videos, photography, comedy, and other popular media.” – Duron

PRIMER Microstudio presents Dave Perillo

The PRIMER Microstudio is pleased to present a complete alphabet created by illustrator Dave Perillo for this March’s First Friday opening:

NOW YOU KNOW
A Most Unusual Alphabet

Opening Reception March 5th 2009 6pm-9pm
Show Runs March 5th – March 31st

Dave Perillo was born in 1974, the same year Wham-O introduced the Slip N’Slide…coincidence? In 1st grade, Dave revealed in his autobiography “Me Book”, that when he grew up he would like to be Ziggy. This ambition was deflated by 2nd grade when he realized that A) Ziggy is not real, B) Ziggy is completely bald, and C) Ziggy wears no pants. While the thought of going throughout life sans pants was somewhat appealing he decided to pursue his second choice, a career in art.

Dave draws inspiration for his work from many of the following sources: 1950’s sci-fi movies, Charles Schultz, Jim Flora, Ray Harryhausen, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Henson, Hanna Barbera, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock and character advertising icons. Dave currently resides in the burbs of Philly, works as an illustrator, believes that bowling is the sport of kings and a bag of Swedish Fish is a seafood dinner. Check out more of Dave’s work at http://montygog.blogspot.com.

If you can’t make it to the opening, the gallery is open during normal business hours (after hours by appt), and the exhibition will be on display all month long. We are easily accessible from Philadelphia via the R2 (station is a block from the gallery) and I-95. Stop by and help support the arts in Hatboro!

Wexler Gallery Openings

Gallery Opening / No Comments

Coinciding with the 44th annual National Council for Education on the Ceramic Arts Conference in Philadelphia (March 31-April 3, 2010), Wexler Gallery proudly presents:

The Peaceable Queendom, an installation of new work by Philadelphia based ceramic artist and sculptor Adelaide Paul in the main gallery space.

The Hermaphrodites: Living In Two Worlds, a group show curated by Leslie Ferrin, owner of Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield, MA. The exhibition will take place on the gallery’s second floor.

The exhibition will run from March 5th through May 1st, 2010. An opening reception with the artist will take place on First Friday, April 2nd, from 5-8pm.

Exploring the idea that American culture posits an alternately sentimental and callous relationship between humans and both domesticated and wild animals, Adelaide Paul’s The Peaceable Queendom will include life-sized interpretations of animate beings such as mountain lions, dogs and horses. Having stated that “muscle is meat and, on great many levels, so are we,” the artist poses her animal subjects in provocative positions, often mirroring human characteristics and emotions. Working with both found and fabricated materials, such as taxidermy manikins and brightly colored leather, the artist’s most recent body of work begs the viewer to consider the relationship between the consumer, consumed, and consummated, evoking multiple possibilities as to just who is consumed.

The Hermaphrodites: Living In Two Worlds will focus on figural sculpture that both embodies the literal definition of hermaphrodites (encompassing both genders) and the conceptual nature of the term as it applies to sculpture that can be categorized equally as contemporary fine art sculpture or decorative art. The exhibition will concentrate on contemporary artists working with ceramics, who also adopt other processes, materials, and techniques commonly found outside of their discipline.

Featured artists will include Chris Antemann, Beth Cavener Stichter, Cynthia Consentino, Anne Drew Potter, Judy Fox, Gerit Grimm, Bridget Harper, Sergei Isupov, Myungjin Kim, Dana Major Kanovitz, Kelly Rathbone Garrett, Dirk Staschke, Mara Superior, Tip Toland, Jason Walker, Kurt Weiser, Red Weldon Sandlin, Irina Zaytceva, and many more.

The Wexler Gallery is located at 201 North Third Street in the historical district of Old City Philadelphia. We invite you to visit our gallery or explore our website at www.wexlergallery.com.
