OUT OF PLACE: CLAY AND CONTEXT, is one of 95 exhibitions that are part of INDEPENDENCE: The 44TH Annual National Council On Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference is taking place in Philadelphia, from March 31 – April 3, 2010. The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA is serving as the on-site liaison and organizing body of exhibitions program. Nine clay artists work in Chester County, Pennsylvania, an area rich in pot making tradition. From the 18th and 19th Century, our county was home to over 100 potteries producing Quaker stoneware, majolica, and slipware from the German tradition. Our exhibition will underscore that contemporary forces in the larger world alter the shape of Regionalism. As individual artists, each of us is driven by a personal vision informed by the expansive accessibility of information and experience in contemporary culture. What we share as Chester County potters is a fertile region which filters our experiences through the vibrant energy of its rolling and gentle hills.

OUT OF PLACE: CLAY AND CONTEXT, is among the Concurrent Exhibitions (CIE’s) scheduled as part of the conference. CIE’s are professionally juried exhibitions selected from a vast array of proposals submitted by NCECA’ s membership.
