Wexler Gallery presents Anthony Tammaro

In correlation with DesignPhiladelphia 2010, Wexler Gallery proudly presents Supernatural, exhibition of vessel forms by cutting edge designer Anthony Tammaro. The exhibition will take place on the second floor of the gallery and will run October 1 – 30, 2010. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday, October 9th from 5 – 8pm.

Anthony Tammaro’s most recent body of work explores the technique of slip casting porcelain clay and multiple object production while questioning the sustainability of society’s dependency on disposable plastic containers.

In this series, the artist combines disparate component clay parts to create hybrid creatures of containment while usurping the notion of usability. According to the artist, “they are slightly recognizable ghosts of their original forms which make reference to a function not yet defined. I am challenging the idea of products designed to serve society for a short period of time and then cast off to a waste land where no value is placed on form or previous function.”

Tammaro earned an MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Pennsylvania and a BFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Consistently exhibiting work at galleries on a national level, Tammaro also acts as a consultant for several innovative design companies. His jewelry work has been reviewed by international publications including ELLE Magazine. He presently lives and works in Conshohocken, PA.

The Slingluff Gallery presents Joe Castro

Posted by Side Arts on September 28, 2010
Gallery Opening / No Comments

Visual artist Joe Castro will present “Automatic Amnesia”, a collection of 22 new oil paintings, collages and silk screened posters at the Slingluff Gallery this October. The opening reception will take place Saturday, October 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Slingluff Gallery, 11 W. Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA. There will be an after party immediately following next door at the Manhattan Room, with live music performances by The Sky Drops, Atlas and deVries. For more information and directions, please visit www.slingluffgallery.com

The show’s title is derived from the psychological term Amnesia of the Automatic. Explains Castro, “It’s like this – when you drive the same road to work day after day after day, your mind will sometimes wander off and you’ll zone out into autopilot but somehow you still end up in your company’s parking garage, even if you don’t really remember the details of that actual drive. And I feel like that when making art. You can get so wrapped up in the process, you’re not really conscious of what you’re physically doing so when you come back the next day to see what you’ve done, it surprises you.”

About Joe Castro:
Joe Castro is an accomplished Philadelphia-based artist, musician, designer and filmmaker. His paintings and collages have been exhibited in galleries and art spaces across the United States and Canada, and have been described as “intelligent and brooding…the subjects are often just a little-bit skewed–leading you to take a deeper look.”

Originally from Delaware, Castro was the lead guitar player in several bands including the critically acclaimed The Situation. Formed in 2001, The Situation signed with Elephant Stone records in 2004, releasing The Reece Nasty EP, followed by their self titled full length in 2006, both garnered critical praise from Pitchfork, The Big Takeover,Skyscraper and Magnet. The band toured the states, and opened for bands such as The Strokes, The Libertines, Nada Surf, BJM, The Make-Up and Arthur Lee & Love. Their music has been featured on shows for both MTV and Fuel TV. The group disbanded in 2006.

Taking a keen interest in the visual representation of the band, he was responsible for most of the group’s flyers and album graphics and soon found he was receiving as much notice for his art and t-shirt designs as for his guitar playing. In 2006, he began to show his paintings in area galleries. In 2007, he was commissioned to paint a mural for grammy nominated producer Jim Salamone’s new recording studio, Cambridge Sound Studios in Newtown, PA. In 2009, he was invited to be a founding member of the contemporary art, skateboarding and street culture website, clubmumble.com. And in 2010, he was one of 6 artists selected (from over 450 applicants) by Vans and Color Magazine to customize one pair of canvas sneakers, which were displayed in art shows in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.

When not working on new paintings and collages, he runs his own graphic design business, Red Attic Studios, where he has created gig posters for bands such as She & Him, Echo and the Bunnymen, Josh Ritter and Pavement. He has won numerous awards for his design work, which has been featured in Graphic Design USA. He hosts a popular music podcast via his website, mightyjoecastro.com, and recently co-directed the popular music video Truth Is for The Sky Drops, which was shot entirely on super 8 film. He is a board member of the Wilmington Skate Project, where he curated two benefit art shows, one of which was featured on Fuel TV’s What’s Happening with Chris Pastras show.

Tyme Gallery presents the First Plein Air Festival

Posted by Side Arts on September 25, 2010
Fairs and Festivals / No Comments

Tyme Gallery is holding their first Plein Air Festival in conjunction with the Historic Grange Estate in Havertown and the St. Raphaela Retreat Center in Haverford. Plein air is all about capturing the light and the nuance of life in a natural outdoor setting. Artists come and set up their easels and paint, paint, paint.

Artists are invited for three (3) days of painting at the Grange Estate and the public is invited to come watch and enjoy the process. Upon completion of the painting the artwork will be juried (judged) at Tyme Gallery. The three (3) days of painting will be followed up with a reception at St. Raphaela Retreat Center. The reception allows artists and art lovers to enjoy the paintings and the company. There will also be an award ceremony at 7:00 pm to celebrate the winners. The beautiful settings of the Grange make the perfect backdrop for painting and the tranquil atmosphere of the Retreat Center make it the perfect spot for an art exhibition.

The Grange Estate, previously known as Maen Coch and Clifton Hall, was one of the first settlements in Havertown in 1682. The property now reflects a mid-19th century gentleman’s country seat with a mansion and seven outbuildings on ten acres. Built in 1700, the mansion had several notable owners and was expanded through the 1850s.

The house was owned by patriot John Ross during the late 18th century, who gave his country estate its current name after the home of Lafayette. Ross’s house was frequented by several notable historic figures including George Washington and Lafayette. In 1815, the house was purchased by Manuel Eyre, Jr., son of Washington aide Manuel Eyre, who served with the General during the Revolution.

The last family to occupy the mansion did so from 1913–1974, at which point it was purchased by Haverford Township. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 as The Grange. The mansion is now maintained as a museum and community center. Regular tours are available from April to October and during the December holidays. The St Raphaela Retreat Center was founded in 1957 in response to Saint Raphaela’s dedication to retreat ministry. The Center was established by the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a worldwide Eucharistic community whose spirituality is to celebrate God’s unconditional love by promoting wholeness, peace and reconciliation.

Each year, St. Raphaela Center welcomes over 5,000 guests and visitors of all faiths, ages and walks of life. The year round beauty and tranquility of St. Raphaela Center provides a place where individuals may come and be touched by God’s loving presence.
So when you come there will be three days of painting, October 7th, 8th, and 9th, at the Grange Estate at 142 Myrtle Ave in Havertown and a beautiful reception October 9th, at the tranquil St. Raphaela Retreat Center at 616 Coopertown Road in Haverford. The reception is from 6:00 to 9:00pm with an award ceremony at 7:00pm. Tickets for the reception are $10.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door. For additional information about the festival you can email madametyme@tymegallery.com or call 610-853-1215. Tyme Gallery is located at 17 W. Eagle Road in Havertown. Twenty-two Gallery presents Karen Davies

Posted by Side Arts on September 25, 2010
Gallery Opening / No Comments

“Recent Work” by Karen S. Davies is a wonderful example of mixed media artwork. As Karen herself describes it: My work is inherently inspired by the landscape, which can be elusive and mysterious. I try to capture these qualities in my work and, with that, sometimes humanity’s struggle to contain or explain the natural world.

I use a thick impasto of materials built up to convey the materiality of rock and earth, then add the glitter of reflected light and the pattern of water running through the landscape. Occasionally I will overlap everything with simple geometries, a token of our human influence in the world.

October 8 – November 7
Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 8th, 6 to 9 PM

Twenty-Two gallery represents quality, affordable, original art by twenty-two area artists. Owned by Shawn Murray, the gallery is also the permanent home of the Bruce Murray Collection of original photography depicting vintage baseball images and Americana from the early 20th century.

Area 919 presents Jacque Liu

Michael Garden and AREA 919 present:
Jacque Liu: An Abstraction of Details

Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 29th, 6-9PM
CITYSPACE, 2200 Walnut, Philadelphia, 19103

In the parlor of a former Victorian Mansion near Rittenhouse Square, currently home to the offices of Michael Garden’s real estate practice, Liu’s installation will include numerous “drawings”; Mylar and paper constructions of minute architectural details in magnified scale. In a setting of Victorian architectural excess, Liu’s minimal reliefs will serve as centering elements from which to begin to identify a more immediate sense of place, as well as launch pads pushing away from the period decoration and exuberance of one of the most embellished eras of American design and lifestyle.

Jacque Liu’s thoughts on the project:

Travel plays an important role in my life. Much of my work stems from a desire to comprehend the notion of place. To understand place, my eye gravitates toward a microcosmic scale, often focusing on intimate architectural elements, such as windows, doors, vents, staircases, chairs.

My work, following my eye, becomes an abstraction of details within my encountered landscapes. The process is personal. I recast imprints of my history of places, but I also re-contextualize a history (whether real or imagined) of the object or site at hand.

Site feeds my ideas. While each idea changes its respective object or site, every work still retains a memory of what it was. The work for AREA 919 at CITYSPACE will focus on an abstraction of details through site-specific installation and drawing.

Exhibit runs through Friday, November 13th, 2010
