Thank you so much to the Center for Emerging Visual Artists and Philadelphia Open Studio Tours for creating such a wonderful experience design, the catalog with maps is a keeper, the posters around town were divine especially when DoN spotted an artist he knows in the picture, the advertising and promotion was probably the best ever by a local arts organization with a terrific web resource, inviting all of the city to come out and support their local artists.

On Friday November 12th Tyme Gallery is proud to present the sensitive photography of Hari Hawkins and M. Elizabeth Tenerelli. Both have an eye for classic forms with Hawkins’ tender nudes and Tenerelli’s breathtaking florals. Hawkins will also present his masterful woodworkings.

Born in Jamaica Queens New York, Hari Hawkins now calls Trenton, New Jersey, his home. For 25 years, Hari Hawkins has shared his extraordinary photographic and woodworking talents with fellow art lovers across the United States and beyond. Hawkin’s desire to travel and develop his creative vision in his own individual way became clear very early in life. As his high school woodshop class nurtured new interest in creating beautiful woodwork and refurbishing quality antiques, Hari’s first camera purchase, a Pentax at age fifteen, helped open a new world of possibilities for a budding artist.

M. Elizabeth Tenerelli, a native of Springfield, Delaware County, began her photographic work over a decade ago. She started her professional photographic career as a photographer for the Tyler Arboretum in Media, Winterthur Estate and Gibraltar Gardens in Delaware. Tenerelli is a nationally published photographer, a member of the Garden Writers Association and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Two Songs a collection of sensitive, mesmerizing florals, Nudes, photography and woodworkings. So come meet the photographers the night of the opening reception and hear their interesting journeys. The reception is Friday, November 12th, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. The reception is catered with hors d’ oeuvres from Antonella’s Italian Kitchen in Rosemont and is free to the public. Twenty-two Gallery presents Bruce Murray, Sr.

Gallery Opening / No Comments

Ride the Baseball Playoff wave a bit longer and visit Twenty-Two Gallery to view the photographic artwork of “The Master” Philadelphia photographer, Bruce Murray,Sr. (1893-1969). Images of baseball greats such as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Chuck Klein, and Connie Mack are a sampling of what this historic and entertaining exhibition has to offer.

For over four decades, Bruce Murray, Sr.’s work with The Ledger, and later The Evening Bulletin, earned him recognition as one of the best photojournalists in the business. The sports world, though, always had a certain fascination for Murray. He particularly loved baseball and enjoyed spending time at Philadelphia A’s Shibe Park or Phillies’ Baker Bowl. Several of Murray’s photographs are in the permanent collection of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

The photographer’s grandson, Shawn Murray, will be on hand to answer questions and give background information at the Opening Reception, “Second Friday”, November 12, 6 to 9 PM.

The images of the Legends of Baseball, historical figures and events, as well as everyday people, street scenes and children, are all printed from the archive of glass-plate large format negatives handed down for safe keeping from grandfather, to father to son. The images will range from years: 1911 to 1940.

Projects Gallery presents Vivian Wolovitz

Posted by Side Arts on October 18, 2010
Gallery Opening / No Comments

Projects Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition by Vivian Wolovitz – “Second Nature”. Ms. Wolovitz will present a grouping of recently completed large and small-scale abstract paintings.

“Second Nature” brings us into intimate contact with Vivian’s remarkable personal vision. The rich impastoed surfaces, repeatedly worked and rebuilt, immediately reveal the artist’s deep commitment to both painting and her connection to the landscape. As her brush crosses the surface creating pentimenti upon pentimenti and color field on color field, one is confronted by a rich sense of a “land space” fully felt and understood. As coined by Philadelphia art critic Edward Sozanski, this is “slow art.” When one looks upon the surface, they are drawn immediately to the color. Slowly, upon continued observation, the subsurface is revealed. A scraping here, a scratching there and throughout layers revealed in an almost hypnotic mantra.

Vivian leaves us few clues as to the initial impulse for each painting; yet, the presence of the landscape is complete and total. As one stands in the weathered and well-worn barn that is her studio, there are two things that captivate the visitor. The first, of course, are the paintings. The other is the enormous presence of the windows to the landscape just beyond the wall. These paintings have this light, this air, this authority. However, they also have something else – a sense of the purity of art. Art made from experience free from superficial reference. Art that is itself nature and just as complete.

These are not the works of someone new to the task. They reflect the master’s hand in every way. They are confident and bold, hard fought yet fresh. One loses oneself in the fluid juice of oil paint stayed just long enough to lock onto a fleeting sense of a moment now frozen in the viscous brew. In this show we see paintings of profound commitment and deep feeling. As one moves through the exhibition, each canvas is a first-time experience, leading the viewer through the artist’s eyes and senses. The vivid freshness of this work and the unmistakable feeling of the artist’s deep involvement in their making leads a viewer to believe that they are being made before their very eyes. It is exactly this that makes them art, expression realized in tranquility. The strong earthly connection, together with the nervous tangibility of their making, comes together to create a full and memorable experience in paint.

“Second Nature” will be on display November 5 – 27, 2010. There will also be an artist’s reception First Friday November 5th from 6 – 9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Projects Gallery is located at 629 N. 2nd St. in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties section. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Friday 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday noon to 7 p.m.
