“Curious Creatures” Art Show by Lynnette Shelley

Feb. 4-27, 2011 at Nichols Berg Gallery

Located at: 8611 Germantown Avenue (Chestnut Hill), Philadelphia, PA; 206-380-4070

This February, Nichols Berg Gallery will be featuring the work of Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley

“One of my primary interests has always been exploring legends and stories from around the world. Why are certain motifs ubiquitous across cultures and continents? These archetypal stories are told repeatedly in different guises throughout myth and folklore, and animals are often used to convey these mysteries. Whether painted on cave walls, portrayed as omens or worshiped as personifications of the gods, animals were a favorite theme for our ancestors. My artwork takes a closer look at this archetypal animal kingdom. Reinterpreted through abstraction, decorative element and contemporary vision, these creatures speak to our collective unconscious.”

In addition to Lynnette’s artwork, stained glass artist Patrice Schelkun will be exhibiting one of her stained glass creations based off of Lynnette’s piece titled “The Dryad”. Both Lynnette’s original artwork of “The Dryad” as well as Patrice’s inspired rendition of it will be displayed together at the gallery.

Artist Reception is on
FRIDAY, FEB 4 2011
6 to 9 PM
Refreshments will be served.

About the Artist

Lynnette Shelley is a Delaware native who moved to the Philadelphia area in 1999. Having a great love animals, fairytales, and world mythology, Lynnette fuses these influences into her strikingly unique illustrations. Her artwork strikes a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her animal art and creature illustrations are both primitive and sophisticated, and have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.

Her artwork has been displayed nationally as well as at various venues across the Philadelphia and surrounding metropolitan areas, including the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST); the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences; The Straube Center in Pennington, NJ; Three Ravens Gallery in Ardmore, PA; the Brandywine Festival of the Arts; and the Wilmington Grand Opera House. Some of her creature drawings were featured in the animated short “The Spider Is the Web” shown at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, while more of her artwork was featured as part of an on-screen art show at the 2008 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon. She also exhibited at the juried art show at Dragon Con in Atlanta, GA, one of the largest fantasy / sci fi-themed conventions in the world. In 2011, she will be exhibiting at 28th Annual Immaculata University Art Show, an international juried art show at Immaculata University, amongst other exhibits. Please see her website’s exhibitions page for her current event schedule.

Lynnette is represented by Countryside Gallery in Newtown, PA. She is also a member of InLiquid, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit arts organization.

In addition to her fine art pursuits, Lynnette is also the co-founder of The Red Masque, an original avant rock band which has played numerous shows and festivals since 2001. The Red Masque is signed to an experimental / avant label based out of Colorado.

Lynnette currently lives and works out of Ambler, PA.

Slingluff Gallery presents Erin Murray

Architecture, inside and out, has been featured in painting from the 18th century up to current times in Andrew Wyeth’s famously praised paintings. Erin Murray‘s “Architectural Parlante”, opening at The Slingluff Gallery on February 5thfrom 6-9p, shows us subtle nuances of architectural absurdity.

Murray’s new work is exquisitely rendered realistic oil paintings on panel and charcoal and graphite on paper. She explores the humor, humility, beauty, and ultimately the humanity to be found in our built environment; like through a painting of a humble cinder block building more interesting for the graffiti on its backside than anything on its front.

“Architecture Parlante” is a type of building or structure that tells you what it is through its design. A classic example is the hot dog stand shaped like a hot dog.

Erin Murray has shown extensively in the Philadelphia region after graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001. She was a career development program fellow at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists from 2002-2004, and her work has been featured in New American Paintings and Philadelphia Magazine. Murray lives and works in Philadelphia.

Rick Wright Late Petroleum Age Vessels Philly Photography Now

On a cold Saturday night, DoN walked over to the Fleisher Art Memorial Gallery on Christian Street for the closing party of Rick Wrights long running exhibition, Late Petroleum Age Vessels; a unique portrait collection of ordinary household plastic containers, bottles and jugs.  The anthropomorphic effect embedded in the rich black and white photographs of plastic bottle faces actually activated the face recognition technology in DoN’s new camera – a Kodak Z981 with 14 megapixels and 26x zoom!

But, Rick dimmed DoN’s camera shine a bit by demo-ing an iPhone app that simulates a variety of SLR cameras from a Brownie to a Leica with a wide selection of “film” and developing effects; no wonder the camera was so cheap, it’s already obsolete!?!
