The exhibition will be presented at 110 CHURCH gallery located at 110 Church Street in Old City and opens on First Friday, March 4th. The Opening Reception and Artist Talks will be on Friday, March 4th from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. The Closing Reception will be held on First Friday, April 1st from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Gallery hours for this exhibition are Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 1:30 – 6:30 PM and by appointment. Located in historic Old City, Philadelphia’s art district, 110 CHURCH gallery has been established to show site specific works and unseen work by both emerging and established artists.

Julia Blaukopf is a social artist and photographer who focuses on the work of creatives and innovators in Germany to craft visual narratives that speak to the story behind each subject. She fuses the images with various materials including wallpaper, glass disks, shells, and fabric to create installations that speak to documentary and design. Elizabeth Crisman’s work contemplates man’s evolution, both in reference to the human body and the tools used. In response to her experience volunteering at the Kfar HaHoresh excavation site in Israel, she addresses these ideas through the use of ceramic pieces made from plaster molds and photo based mediums.

CFEVA’s Alumni Travel Grant Program helps its alumni take advantage of opportunities involving travel that could have a significant, positive impact on their work. Examples include apprenticeships, use of a particular facility such as a world-class foundry or print shop, residencies and international workshops, and other specific projects involving travel. This exhibition will feature photographs and installations inspired by the experiences each artist had while traveling in Germany and Israel.

Anna Shukeylo’s work concentrates on the sensuality of physical and emotional space. Her primary subject is human emotion which creates the challenge of finding the visual expression for ephemeral human experiences. Tender, fleeting moments such as a warm embrace or the awe of physical space serve as inspiration for Shukeylo’s work.

Ms. Shukeylo was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1988. She graduated the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia with a Certificate and a BFA degree and is currently an emerging artist in the Philadelphia area.

In this new series Ms. Shukeylo works with liquid acrylic on mylar which is guided by the flow of water. The material’s spontaneity allows the artist to experiment with and mirror natural emotional qualities found in everyday life.

Free Meeting and Info Session WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 23

TOMORROW! Wednesday Feb 23 at 5:30pm
The Leeway Foundation, 1315 Walnut Street, Suite 832, Philadelphia
Hosted by CultureWorks of Greater Philadelphia

Don’t miss this important opportunity to get information and help make decisions regarding physical space resources for visual artists in Philadelphia.

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists and the Leeway Foundation are helping get the word out on behalf of Partners for Sacred Places and CultureWorks of Greater Philadelphia, who are conducting a study to assess the physical space needs of visual and performing artists in comparison to space availabilty through Sacred Places in the City. We would like to hear your thoughts as a visual artist and/or member of the Philadelphia creative community…and at the same time inform you about the abundant resources available with Center City churches and synagogues for administrative, studio and gallery spaces! This is an innovative potential for collaboration, and has already served many very well.

There will be a free town-hall style meeting open to all members of the visual arts community on Wednesday February 23rd from 5:30 – 7pm at The Leeway Foundation (The Philadelphia Building, 1315 Walnut Street, Suite 832, Philadelphia, PA 19107).

For more information about the meeting or this study, please contact Marcel Williams Foster at mfoster@cultureworksphila.org.

Slingluff Gallery presents Jai Tanju

Heavy. Literally and physically, about 115 pounds of metal to be specific. Jai Tanju’s solo show “Heavy” at The Slingluff Gallery, March 5 from 6-9pm, is an interactive photography show. He has combined metal work and his 15 years of skateboarding photography to make this show heavy, which correlates to the heavy content of his photos and the metal that the photos are mounted on. Also, most of the photos are encased with a metal hinged top that viewer lifts to reveal the photo. Why metal and photography? Jai has only been working in the metal fabricating field for about a year, but he’s fallen in love with the cold, heavy, rusty and dangerous aspects of the job and it was only natural for him to combine the two.

Jai Tanju, born in Long Island, NY and raised in San Jose, CA, comes from a long line of painters from Turkey. So, he has the mind of a painter but his style really meshed well with photography. At 25, Jai started taking pictures with a camera his grandfather gave him. He took a photography class at a local community college where he got a D-. That was the end of his class instruction, but the just the beginning of his love for photography. At the time he was living in downtown San Jose with his two friends Jason Adams & Tim Brauch, both pro skateboarders. He then started taking a lot of pictures of them & their skateboarding abitilities. Slowly he started to make something off these pictures & a few years later he was offered a job at skateboarder magazine where he worked for about 4 years, traveling, skateboarding & taking pictures along the way of his friends, surroundings & other pro skaters. His career as a skateboarding photograph has been going strong ever since.

Twenty-two Gallery presents Jim Cobb

“Reflections: Bottles & Other Things”
Paintings by Jim Cobb

March 11 – April 3
Opening Reception: Friday, March 11, 6 to 9 PM

People have been painting for some 40 thousand years and it is highly unlikely that we will find a new approach to the process. Still, each of us is unique and it is this uniqueness that we must chase rather than the style of the moment.

The artist does not see things much differently than anyone else; he tries instead to paint his feelings about the object. Cezanne put it best: “the nature we see and the nature that is outside.” I suspect that each feeling is unique to one person; this is the difference among us.

My paintings are a reflection of me and probably echo the time lived in Asia and the years spent in Europe. You will see that I prefer toned paintings and dislike lines. I have yet to find the first line in nature. Objects are seen and then evaporate as things around them crowd their space.

I do not believe (or want) my paintings to be confrontational. We have enough of that energy already. Instead, I want my work to inspire quiet observation and sincere emotion.

Indeed, when we as artists share our feelings through “spots of color”, we hope for a spark which will lead to the beauty around us. We understand that the object and its shadow are illusions. Only the feeling is real. – Jim Cobb
