Lenni, PA Fosters Creativity, Annual Art Studio Opening
Who could have guessed it?! Lenni, a hilly, picturesque former mill town just on the edge of Aston is quickly becoming a burgeoning artists’ community. And in mid-November you can not only indulge your love of all things art, but you can meet and greet the actual artists in their own studios where their works will be available for purchase. If you’re an art lover, then you know the most satisfying way to invest in art is directly from the artist; a real bond is formed with the person who created what you just fell in love with and can’t live without.
The transformation of Lenni started 13 years ago when several visionary artists looked at unused old mill structures and envisioned artists’ studios. The Heron and Heron Crest Studios were hatched and soon upwards of 16 artists had formed an enclave.
Madeleine Kelly, one of the Heron Crest Studios artists, made the decision in fall of 2009 to seek larger studio space and didn’t have to look far as down the street, in another mill building, was a perfect studio space with plenty of elbow room and great light—crucial for an artist. She joined Elisabeth Jönsson Brown, a hand weaver and women’s clothing designer, who had quietly been in Lenni for over 20 years. Together they formed “2 NEW ROAD STUDIOS.”.
An artist and educator who believes that art is passion, discovery, evolution and an endless journey, Kelly enjoys working with all mediums, but is particularly passionate about colors and textures which can be achieved with pastels and oils. Kelly is a signature member is several area guilds and societies and her work hangs in collections across the country. She has won innumerable awards for her work and holds workshops and classes throughout the tri-state area. This past spring she was featured in the April issue of American Artist in a several page illustrated spread: “Maintain a Beginner’s Sense of Adventure.” The Philadelphia Inquirer also recently featured an article on her and her work entitled “Madeleine Kelly paints her future with bold strokes.”
Swedish-born Elisabeth Jönsson Brown hand weaves her own fabrics on room-sized looms in her studio. Her classical designs include meticulously tailored coats, jackets, skirts, capes, shawls, scarves, and hats; and Jönsson Brown feels they become sensible choices for almost any occasion. When designing her hand woven fabrics she states that she is very much influenced by her Swedish heritage, so there is an appealing European flair to her garments. She selects the finest of yarns to work with and creates distinctive textures and color combinations in a wide selection of styles and sizes.
